"Don't cry because it's over, smile because it happened" ~ Dr. Seuess

March definitely came in like a lion and seems to be exiting like a lamb.  Thankfully, Mother Nature received the memo!  As we march toward Spring Break, I cannot resist reflecting on how much our students have grown this year.  It is abundantly clear when you visit the K and 1st classes - places where 3 months of academic and social growth is practically a lifetime!  However, it is also evident when you see our 4th and 5th grade students on stage, singing and dancing their way into the hearts of hundreds!  Our students are growing into young people with the ability to set a goal and achieve it, to work with peers in a collaborative way, and to take risks, managing the highs and lows with grace.  Honestly, we can all learn a thing or two from them.  I feel quite lucky to spend my days watching all of this good "stuff" happen and thank you for your most important role in all of it - as parents!
  • INTERNATIONAL DAY:  This event is a highlight each year!  Please join us on Thursday evening, 4/6, for a wonderful celebration of food, culture and dance!  The fun kicks off for students with an assembly sponsored by the HSA of Spanish Flamenco Dancers on Thursday and will continue through the day on Friday, 4/7, as they visit the displays around the gym.  This event should not be missed!
  • KINDNESS DRIVE FOR APRIL:  Next month we are collecting toothpaste for the Ridgewood Social Services Food Pantry.  The collection ends on April 12th and I invite everyone to send in at least one item.  Your children love putting their can in the bucket and getting a high five from me each month!
  • APRIL BREAK:  This break is always a wonderful time to recharge batteries and get the kids outside for some fun.  I hope you enjoy!  Please remember that students do not return to school until Tuesday, April 18th.
  • TEACHER OF THE YEAR:  A GIANT congratulations to Ms. Beth Fischetti on her selection as Somerville School's 2017 Teacher of the Year.  Ms. Fischetti is a gift to her students and our community; her deep professional expertise coupled with a genuine love of students and Somerville results in a wonderful experience for students year after year!  I also believe her foundational training as a Somerville Student years ago is a major part of her success!  Well Deserved!
Enjoy the "lamb-like" weather that is ahead and prepare for a spring where your students, along with the flowers, blossom in front of your eyes!

March is MS awareness month! Because MS awareness is represented by the color orange, orange hair extentions will be for sale after school this Wednesday for $8. We'll put them in your hair right there!  Profits from the sale will go to benefit Lesleypalooza. Get an orange streak and show your support!  We will also have Lesleypalooza bracelets for sale for $2.

The Third Grade Brownie Troop is working on their pet care badge and they will be collecting gently-used pet items for a local animal shelter during the first three weeks of April.  There will be a box set out next to the office to collect these things.  Leashes, collars, dishes, gently used toys are all appreciated.

Congratulations to the cast and crew of SUESSICAL. Bravo!!  Job well done to our 4th and 5th grade actors, and to all involved!!  The cast and directors and crew worked so hard all year, and it definitely showed this past weekend!  Such a fun and vibrant and energetic show to watch.  Thank you to all of the parent volunteers that worked so hard behind the scenes, too.  It wouldn’t have happened without you!

GROCERY CARDS: orders are due next Tuesday April 4th.  Purchase $100 cards from either Kings, Fairway, Stop & Shop or Shop Rite for face value, and the HSA makes 5% back on every purchase.  (Fairway increases its percentage as we spend more throughout the year, to as high as 10%.)   Questions?  Email Karyn Erb; Amy Marlin;  or Rhonda Marx
